Just wondering, what's the best and most efficient (and easy!) way to network 2 computers at home? I need to do this for a course I'm on and apparently both computers need to be running Windows 2000. I've got network cards installed. What next? Ta. Lisa

I used to network 2 x 98SE computers and now 2 x XP and 1 x 98SE all together. If you have gotten the NICs properly installed and all is going OK, follow this: First off if you did an upgrade from a previous windows, find and get rid of any NETBEUI which may be around. Next, TCP/IP only on: 1) Computer connected directly to Internet. Assuming your ISP has auto config, grab their DNS numbers, allow the ISP to assign IP auto unless you have to have a static IP in which case fill that number in. In the DNS section for that same ISP, fill in the DNS numbers. Now go to ADVANCED tab and click on to "allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection". Note that the network must be ENABLED to see this option. On the LAN side of the same computer, call it 192.168.0.1 with subnet 255.255.255.0 and make sure firewalls to both ISP and LAN are off on all machines for now. 2) Computer connected to LAN and not directly to Internet. Assign it as 192.168.0.2 same subnet. Install 192.168.0.1 as gateway in order to allow it to find out how to get OUT to internet and enable DNS and fill in the DNS numbers of your ISP. Now, the machine on the lan knows where to find the DNS server and also Internet. Note to make sure after all this is done, reboot both machines, make sure firewalls are off and then see if you can see the other machines and internet on both machines, which you will if your LAN hardware is working OK. Regards, Greg.

Network config. If you want the simplest that works with and windows-windows and no loss of speed when starting the computer load the NIC, connect crossover cable if UTP, or just straight coax if 10BaseT, give each a name in Network settings and link only netbui to NIC. ie TCPIP slows the startup of computer HEAPS. Enable sharing and select drives to share and share them. Then goto find.. computer ..(name of other computer) and map network drive. Reconnect at startup if you want. This is not the 'bells an whistle' solution but there is no sharing of tcpip between internet and network and is fast and reliable. -- John Email:#jrfeng#@ozemail.com.au PS: remove #'s.

Netbeui is no longer supported by MS so should be avoidede. Much simpler for ongoing Windows upgrades just to manually config using TCP/IP the whole way.
