Just heard on the radio news that NSW have just announced that they are releasing new standard issue number plates. Black on yellow plates. Letter, Letter, Number, Number, Letter, Letter. They reckon that the numbering system should last until 2025?!? -- Athol <http://cust.idl.com.au/athol> Linux Registered User # 254000 I'm a Libran Engineer. I don't argue, I discuss.

I head Scully quoting similar figures on the news tonight. How do you get 31 million? I get 26 x 26 x 10 x 10 x 26 x 26 which equals almost 46 million combos. Are they not going to isssue certain letters or numbers? Yes but if you choose the letters like say JIM-001, yes it is a standard plate but with their new pricing system, if you choose what letters you get charged an annual fee. Did this on their site Vehicle type: Car/Light Truck Content: JIM095 Content type: Personalised Style: White Cost: $50.00 ordering fee plus annual fee of $100.00 http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/myPlates/olpsChoosePlates.do?action=createNew if you want to have a look. Style and content fees http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/numberplates/pricelist.html Looks like you can not personalise the Black/yellow ones. These fees are only about 1 year old. If you were to get the same plates today there would be an annual fee. They are not going to charge any persons with the annual fee before the new pricing system came into effect. The only issue, which has been discussed on this group prior, is that if you were to transfer the plate to a new vehicle would the annual fee then commence. My math skill may not be the best but your logic works except the 45.69 million odd combos includes all combinations including 1 to 5 digits and the fact they do not have O or I as they get mixed up with 0 and 1 on the same plate. So it would be 24x24x10x10x24x24 = 33.17 million minus (All the 1 to 5 combo's) 1.38 million. Leaves about 31.79 million. There could be other combos they do not allow but nothing comes to mind. "Dave W. @yourmail.org.au>" <wickhams-007<nospam> wrote in message news:40fe5e42$1@news.velocitynet.com.au... I head Scully quoting similar figures on the news tonight. How do you get 31 million? Be glad they had the decency not to change the rules for people who already "owned" their special number. As a tax payer I have no problem with governments selling the right to use a particular number for the best return they can get, just like any commercial organisation sells their offerings for the best return.

Sure, But why is the price of the "service" they are selling after the number plate has been made etc... different ? Exactly the same process would be used to renew a $100 annual fee as it would a $130 annual fee. Just a question...not government bashing. Because some people are prepared to pay more. It's pretty standard marketing theory. Supply and demand for personalised plates are both pretty elastic. Best price is largely about what produces the best multiple of #customers x $fee. Charge more for fancier numbers because people will willingly pay more. And those of us who think the prices are more than the numbers are worth chuckle to ourselves as the government makes money in voluntary fees instead of taxes.

The ACCC (federal regulator) normally requires price of things produced by a monopoly to be reasonably related to be the cost of providing that thing. However, the ACCC probably hasnt been allowed to attack State government owned enterprises.

If you owned the plate, and the state government took it off you (or prevented you using it only so they can charge for you to use it) , then you would be due compensation....thats common law, a principle of law which not even state governments can legislate aganst. They can try to legislate, but that legislation is routinely overriden by courts, which decide the principle of ownership isnt something that legislation can alter. > As a tax payer I have no problem with governments selling the right to > use a particular number for the best return they can get, just like any > commercial organisation sells their offerings for the best return.

A problem I have with an ongoing fee for custom plates is the content of the plate is the intellectual property of the person who ordered it. IOW the person that ordered it saved GovCo the effort of managing/issuing/designing a plate sequence. To be 100% correct here, the plates issued by GovCo using their sequence should carry the $100 yearly fee (since the plate user is displaying the intellectual property of GovCo, and GovCo need to manage that sequence) whilst a personal plate saves them all that effort. The only thing that would have to remain as it is would be the one off handling/stamping fee. When you think about it - that could be a win-win for GovCo and the general public.

Of course, for those folk who rock up at the RTA wanting to change rego into their name or rego a new vehicle there might be a blank look. "What plate do you want with that?" "Ummm?" "With a new vehicle we can issue you with a plate, it costs $50. However if we provide the content of the plate there is a $5 yearly fee. I see you wish to register a used vehicle in your name. The plates were issued by us so there is a yearly fee of $5, or design your own content and pay a once off of $50 for a new plate" ..... AFAIK, Patrick's parent's home is in an area that went from being normal to being extremely snooty because of proximity to the ocean. A house that should, based upon its size, block size, etc. be worth about $75K is now valued so high that it now attracts land tax. This is similar to a number of elderly residents in Newcastle's suburb Merewether, where the council changed the rates calculation such that the elderly residents couldn't pay their rates on houses that they had owned for 50+ years and were being forced to sell. So, according to you, it is reasonable to change the circumstances surrounding a person such that they are robbed of the home that they've lived in for most of their life? -- Athol <http://cust.idl.com.au/athol> Linux Registered User # 254000 I'm a Libran Engineer.
