New NSW numberplates

Just heard on the radio news that NSW have just announced that
they are releasing new standard issue number plates.

Black on yellow plates.

Letter, Letter, Number, Number, Letter, Letter.

They reckon that the numbering system should last until 2025?!?

Wasn't it 2050?

Considering we have 3 letters, 2 numbers and a letter available, I'm
wondering why they've bothered with these new number plates?

Cheers,

I head Scully quoting similar figures on the news tonight.

How do you get 31 million?

I get 26 x 26 x 10 x 10 x 26 x 26 which equals almost 46 million combos.

Are they not going to isssue certain letters or numbers?

Yes but if you choose the letters like say JIM-001, yes it is a standard
plate but with their new pricing system, if you choose what letters you get
charged an annual fee.

Did this on their site
Vehicle type: Car/Light Truck
Content: JIM095
Content type: Personalised
Style: White
Cost: $50.00 ordering fee plus annual fee of $100.00

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/myPlates/olpsChoosePlates.do?action=createNew if
you want to have a look.

Style and content fees
http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/numberplates/pricelist.html

Looks like you can not personalise the Black/yellow ones.

These fees are only about 1 year old. If you were to get the same plates
today there would be an annual fee. They are not going to charge any persons
with the annual fee before the new pricing system came into effect. The only
issue, which has been discussed on this group prior, is that if you were to
transfer the plate to a new vehicle would the annual fee then commence. Some
RTA staff say no, some say yes and the others just give you a stare blank.

My math skill may not be the best but your logic works except the 45.69
million odd combos includes all combinations including 1 to 5 digits and the
fact they do not have O or I as they get mixed up with 0 and 1 on the same
plate. So it would be 24x24x10x10x24x24 = 33.17 million minus (All the 1 to
5 combo's) 1.38 million. Leaves about 31.79 million. There could be other
combos they do not allow but nothing comes to mind.

I head Scully quoting similar figures on the news tonight.

How do you get 31 million?

I get 26 x 26 x 10 x 10 x 26 x 26 which equals almost 46 million combos.

Are they not going to isssue certain letters or numbers?

The government is selling a product to you. The product is the right to
use a particular number plate.

On behalf of the rest of us, they set out to make the best possible
return on the rights to special number plates. Be glad they had the
decency not to change the rules for people who already "owned" their
special number.

As a tax payer I have no problem with governments selling the right to
use a particular number for the best return they can get, just like any
commercial organisation sells their offerings for the best return.

Sure,

But why is the price of the "service" they are selling after the number
plate has been made etc... different ?

Exactly the same process would be used to renew a $100 annual fee as it
would a $130 annual fee.

Just a question...not government bashing.

Because some people are prepared to pay more.

It's pretty standard marketing theory. Supply and demand for
personalised plates are both pretty elastic. Best price is largely about
what produces the best multiple of #customers x $fee. Charge more for
fancier numbers because people will willingly pay more.

And those of us who think the prices are more than the numbers are worth
chuckle to ourselves as the government makes money in voluntary fees
instead of taxes.

Exactly. That is why a new sequence is required. It opens up their
market for more personal plates. The current formats have been
done to death.

I don't think GovCo would be doing much business in new ones now,
they are all in the auto section of the newspaper for between $1K
and $10K.

Since the yearly fee came into effect, it is in their interests to
produce a new format. The timing of the two events is probably such
that would folk won't notice. Well, guess what? they did here.

If they try that on, I'll not only be returning my current plates,
I'll be *regularly* going to the RTA to request new plates (that
particular "service" doesn't cost anything, BTW). They fuck with me, I

it doesnt seem fair...

The ACCC (federal regulator) normally requires price of things produced
by a monopoly to be reasonably related to be the cost of providing that thing.

However, the ACCC probably hasnt been allowed to attack State government
owned enterprises.

You got that wrong. The important word you used was "owned"..
If you owned the plate, and the state government took it off you (or prevented you
using it only so they can charge for you to use it) ,
then you would be due compensation....thats common law, a principle of law
which not even state governments can legislate aganst.

They can try to legislate, but that legislation is routinely overriden by
courts, which decide the principle of ownership isnt something that
legislation can alter.

Nonsense.

The new sequence is for standard release, due to the
completion of the run of ABC-123 sequence.

If the NSW RTA just wanted to sell more personalised plates,
they would make a new type of personaliased plate ONLY.

TO explain a conspiracy, you also need to explain why the obvious (nonconspiracy)
theory is wrong.. IE Can you explain what they were going to do with the current standard format ?
maybe invent a few new letters and numbers to put on ???

Ah, well yeah they can argue that if you cant afford to live there,
you can just rent it out, so land tax isnt really affecting your
right to own the land, also rates system set the precedent that you haved
to pay to own land....

They could just make the slimline plates the same size as the standard plates.
but I guess they consulted the cops, who want to be able to complete/correct
a plate that they havent read properly. Having the special format with far fewer
plates issued, they can more likely pick the correct vehicle.

One for Graham W. to ponder...

A problem I have with an ongoing fee for custom plates is the
content of the plate is the intellectual property of the
person who ordered it.

IOW the person that ordered it saved GovCo the effort of
managing/issuing/designing a plate sequence.

To be 100% correct here, the plates issued by GovCo using
their sequence should carry the $100 yearly fee (since the
plate user is displaying the intellectual property of GovCo,
and GovCo need to manage that sequence) whilst a personal
plate saves them all that effort.

The only thing that would have to remain as it is would be
the one off handling/stamping fee.

When you think about it - that could be a win-win for
GovCo and the general public.

They still need to keep track of the 1-off orders. So they don't get issued
multiple times.

But that shouldn't cost *that* much

They need to keep track of every plate. In the case I suggest
it would be covered under the mentioned handling/stamping
fee.

Of course, for those folk who rock up at the RTA wanting to
change rego into their name or rego a new vehicle there might
be a blank look.

"What plate do you want with that?"

"Ummm?"

"With a new vehicle we can issue you with a plate, it costs $50.
However if we provide the content of the plate there is a $5
yearly fee.

I see you wish to register a used vehicle in your name. The
plates were issued by us so there is a yearly fee of $5, or
design your own content and pay a once off of $50 for a new
plate"

..... Of course, the RTA would *NOT* provide a "$ set rego/generate"
type button on the counter ....

hubiack
explammy
indowsps
crylocon
sharesed

Choose a rego from this list, or press RETURN to get a new list

"Oh, OK leave it as it is".

Again - I think it would be a real win-win :-)

UK have sequence. NSW has never had one. With the yellow
and black plates it's a best guess to the age of any given
plate in a sequence.

Nope. The format of the plate suggests combinations, such as YEL1OW,

Oh shite ... you are really _clueless_ on land tax. The fact that I pay
it is because we rent 1/2 of the $2.7M property out. The profit re land
tax will probably stop that in a number of years. It is currently on two
titles - we are thinking what will be on what if we _have_ to sell half
of it.

It really is only worth $75K. The rest is *bullshit* due to
overpopulation and greed. I live in it (can't sell and live in it at
the same time, and I might die before I sell it). So where does that
leave land tax ?

AFAIK, Patrick's parent's home is in an area that went from being normal
to being extremely snooty because of proximity to the ocean. A house
that should, based upon its size, block size, etc. be worth about $75K
is now valued so high that it now attracts land tax.

This is similar to a number of elderly residents in Newcastle's
suburb Merewether, where the council changed the rates calculation such
that the elderly residents couldn't pay their rates on houses that they
had owned for 50+ years and were being forced to sell.

So, according to you, it is reasonable to change the circumstances
surrounding a person such that they are robbed of the home that they've
lived in for most of their life?
