It is quick like any other OS, including Windows when it is still fresh.
Once you install your own software, updates, and start using it
seriously, it starts to slow down.

Funny you said that.

I just bumped into Linux on my VAIO. The VAIO has a WEB button that runs
a splashTop web browser when pressed when the computer is off, without
loading Win7 64. It runs on Linux that is either on the motherboard or
bios or somewhere immediately loads a web browser is based on the Mozilla
browser.

It also has a few other web apps, Skype, IM support, email, and photo
manager.

I'm not interested in Linux. Other than it's quick.

I was just surprised Sony would think to put a Linux OS on board for this
purpose.

Visit: http://www.splashtop.com/faq.php if you're curious.

Visit: http://www.splashtop.com/ and scroll down, click on the "See for

I incorrectly conveyed what I meant by "quick."

Been running Linux since the first days of AIX and RH and the first few
version as well as the latest of Fedora, Ubuntu, Mandrake, etc....

Linux is not faster when you have a GUI, it does get bogged down, and
support for the newest hardware is a real bitch. While I have several
Fedora Core system, I happen to "Like" using XP Pro and Win 7 x64 more
than any of the linux versions from any vendor - I do not experiene the
"slow down" on my win boxes because I keep them clean.

First off, "Been there done that" makes more sense. Second, I call BS on
your assessment. One can do MANY useful things within Linux other than
"email, browser or server." I say you are either a winders zealot, or
are lying about having used Linux further than installing/uninstalling
in an hour or so, or both. Sure if you are a, (brain-dead), gamer, then
yeah, dual boot a Windows flavor for SOME gaming, otherwise, the
"general" user can do just about what they want/need in Linux.. No Ms
Windows needed. I use both for different needs and get the best of BOTH
worlds. This bit of only advocating one or the other crap cracks me up.
..Only shows one or the others' ignorance.

apps tell the tale. if something is missing in Windows (or Linux), then
you use the operating system which can run the app (or install a VM, if
possible).

but this doesn't mean I can't 'only' advocate one system. it just means I
have to be honest about its limitations.

but I kick myself for giving into the temptation: I shouldn't be adding
to this thread as it is part of the incursion of unproductive 'advocacy'
that this group had been, for a short while, free of.

Probably because Macs are technically superior to MS PCs in about every
aspect. But don't own one personally because of it. I buy a PC and
dual boot it with a Linux added.

But do admit, the cost of Macs is a serious impediment to their
acceptance. In fact, about the only valid criticism from MS cheap seats
there is.

Depends what you use them for, since I use Solaris, Linux, XP, Vista and
OpenBSD, I would say use the right took for the right job.

I find loading up older PCs with TB sized disks, Samba and Linux, they
make excellent storage farms to A/V, music and abckups. One huge
advantage is a Linux/Samba server is faster than a MS Windows server for
file retrieval, storage and network copy. And when I backup one system
to another, a Linux to Linux copy goes real fast compared to MS Windows
to MS Windows.

You probably have never seen a real piano.

I don't see the ease of use like Windows and (ahem) Mac.
I don't see COMMERCIAL hardware and software support like Windows and
Mac.
I don't see drivers as much as Windows and Mac.
I don't see industry standard software.
Etc.

Like what, exactly?
Mac use same hardware that PCs use today, I am not sure that you are
aware of this, if you claim that they are superior.

Mac software come way behind their Windows version, that is if they even
do a Mac version.

Technologies on Mac come late and have different name with a higher
price tag.
For example, Apple calls its time machine a technology while other OSes
had that for years and for free.

And the list goes on.

>But don't own one personally because of it. I buy a PC and
>dual boot it with a Linux added.

My guess is that you haven't used a Mac for an extended time or for
living.
I use them, have one at home, and support them at work.
Sorry, I am not impressed at all.
Apple took a rock solid Unix core and turned it into an almost useless
insecure OS.

>But do admit, the cost of Macs is a serious impediment to their

Not only the price is better, the hardware is the same, it is more
supported on Windows, the technologies come first on Windows, the
drivers are everywhere, the software come first on Windows and Mac users
have to wait or get a crippled version, ...etc.

Like I said, for servers, I can't argue Linux value and performance, but
for desktop, I use it just out of curiosity and to keep up with the
technologies.

Sure, you are entitled to you opinion, and so is everyone.
Linux desktop if was as good as Windows, you'd have seen it take over or
at least compete or put up a fight.
It is not, that's harsh reality.

I like Linux over Windows, being in the IT business but I have to be
realistic also.

But at least it drives hardware both ancient and modern, something that
Windows lacks. Now if MS kicked Ballmer out, and produced a decent OS
with earler version driver compatibility, then they migh have a half decent
product. As it is most corporate clients are teed off with retraining for
each new half baked OS release.

People who use Windows can afford to buy hardware once every half
decade..

Which hardware? Why should you replace a working printer because you
ve replaced some other hardware or software? How about a scanner? A
monitor?

It's just stupid to accept replacing working hardware because you've
upgraded your OS or replaced your notebook. Of course, this isn't what
happens to most people, but it shouldn't happen to anyone. Microsoft
knows how to write drivers. So do major hardware suppliers. They
don't bother to do so.

If Macs were priced like PCs, Microsoft stock would crash in minutes of
such an announcement.

But for us mortals where money maters, PC with Linux isn't that bad. It
has been getting consistantly better over the years and to this day even
Microsoft routinely borrows from Linux and FOSS.

That is, there isn't much in MS Windows that didn't exist as FOSS first.

More lies from the resident fool. I have W7 on another computer for
gaming. As it didn't come with a newsreader and I'm only using it for
gaming, there was no need to install a newsreader for your pathetic

Of course MS knows how to write drivers, and with little effort could
produce an OS that accepts drivers from XP up, in compatibility
mode.
MS doesn't because it has a cosy relationship with peripheral
mfrs, who are in business to sell more peripherals (and rip us off
for chipped ink cartridges).
The Twain model for image producing devices, applied for other
peripherals, would have been a good starting point, printer
and scanner control languages are not that complex that
they cannot have a common set of drivers.
