Something strange has happened in baseball; middle relievers are in high demand. The gNats traded two middle relievers (basically) for two very good everyday players. Then they traded an old man with an ERA of about 5 for an excellent 19 year old prospect. Last time I looked, middle relief was the place that tired starters and injury damaged pitchers landed. Basically anyone who was on the cusp of falling out of the majors could be put in middle relief. When did middle relievers become a high dollar, high value commodity? Frankly, I like the trend if in the coming years the Nats keep taking advantage of it like they have in the last two weeks. Am I missing something? CJB

Starters no longer go deep in games and those that do are breaking their arms. Or, like what happened to Clemens last night, pitching a two-hitter for 7 innings and then the next guy throws the game away. I think the middle guys (like Ayala) are equally as important as the "closer".......
