FACT (Not Rumor) About Clemens

Well, here's some information that might be of interest to you...

I work in an industry that has several MLB teams as clients, and I was in Nashville at the Winter Meetings to try to increase our client base. This past Tuesday night, I was flying home to New York and changed planes in Washington. As I was standing in the aisle waiting to depart, a guy behind me saw that I was reading the sports page and heard me muttering something under my breath. He asked what I was reading, and I mentioned that I was surprised how little press the Renteria trade got in the papers that day. He agreed, and we chatted for a minute about the prospects involved in the deal. He then asked my name and affiliation with baseball, and after I told him he extended his hand and said "Hi, I'm Randy Hendricks, and this is my brother Alan".

I tried not to gulp, and we continued chatting for another minute. When the line started to move, I said goodbye and "good luck with the Clemens negotiations". Much to my surprise, he started to talk in-depth about what had transpired over the past 48 hours! Here's what I got:

*the Colorado Rockies have offered an "obscene" amount of money to acquire Clemens

*he's incredibly pissed off at Gerry Hunsicker for calling that press conference to announce they were dropping out of the negotiations

*the Astros were back in touch with him and continuing negotiations within two hours of the Hunsicker press conference

*Roger "wants to play at home, simple as that"

*they were changing planes to go to LaGuardia, which means they were meeting with either the Yankees or Mets on Wednesday

I would say this is about as high-level info as can be acquired. Based on this, I'd say that Rocket will end up an Astro, unless some type of three-way deal can be pulled off.

Reactions?

Strange, but none of this news was new to me. In one way or another,
I'd already heard all this through the media, and the variouis MLB
newsgroups. If what you say really IS true, you really missed the
boat by not finding out who actually was offerred and who was
requested...THAT would be the news I'd be interested in rather than
listening to all the BS from MOST people in the groups...I hope you
got their number...give them a call and report some REAL dirt! :)

They'll continue to do this for years and years, I think. I don't know if
it's possible to build a pitching staff in that ballpark. It tends to crush
most young pitchers, and veterans are becoming smart enough to stay away
now.

As the Hendricks brothers both live in Houston, I'd say that reaction is
understandable and unsurprising.

I still think it was engineered by McLane. Why would a GM do something like
that if not authorized?

He'll have to take less money to do so.

That's a pretty far cry from "home."

This isn't an ordinary trade. The Astros can make a "deal"; they can't break
the bank until they know more about how the new stadium affects revenues.

Hey Toronto guy: Any further on the speculation up there in the
newspapers that there is a secret addendum to the Rocket's contract that
says if he is not traded within 90 days of so requesting (March 1,
1999), he becomes a free agent? If that is true (and that is a big if),
teams would be crazy to give anything up for him and pay a free agent
salary, because if they wait they may only have to do the latter. That
may also be why his agents are trying to scare teams off from trading,
so they can auction him off at spring training.

No, but that was a pretty cool story.

I'm not the Toronto fan but I am one so I will answer. There really hasn't
been anything else on that clause that would make him a free agent and it is
very unlikely it exists and to be honest I would give that a 1% chance of
being there. Everyone would have heard it by now and Paul Beeston I don't
think would have ever put that clause in there. To let Clemens demand a
trade is fine but just letting him walk away as a free agent is another and
I don't think that that is much of a possibilty. But I suppose stranger
things have happened
