Just a question I've been wondering about...if anyone out there can help, it would be greatly appreciated! As we all know, black eyed susans are used for the winning horse in the Preakness....and since black eyed susans ARE NOT in seasons at that time, the centers must be painted black.....my question is....why was a flower that is'nt in season used....what's the history behind it....were they once in season when the Preakness 1st started? Thanks to anyone that can answer this for me.....I'm a huge TB fan!!! Just me, Marina

The black eyed susan was selected for the Preakness and the Maryland state flower because the the armorial colors of Lord Baltimore were yellow and black (at least in two of the quarters), the colors are also on the state flag. Lord Baltimore was the founder of the colony of Maryland.
