I know about Prince of Thieves, Maria's Mon and I was there when Featherbox was put down at Saratoga.I'm a breeder and a neophyte trainer, so please take what I say with a grain of salt. People out west are brutal, Euro and Native alike... they have been and will be.(sorry for the political incorrectness of this statement) Their livelihoods in some distant past depended on a rigorous testing of their stock and therefore I have nothing to say. In the east the brutality is something masked by steroids and bute then shoved under the rug under the guise of 'humane' treatment. From little Peanut Budda, Pappa Bamm, to Prairie Bayou to Union City to Prince of Thieves to Unbridled Song to Sonic Flyer to Feather Box to Maria's Mon to every other horse like Ruffian and Go For Wand who broke down on the dirt track, I have only vet reports: the hard surface of running on dirt will break a horse down faster than anything else (most of them had fractured sesamoids...a dirt track hazard) In Europe, they race on turf, why not in this country? Why do steeplechase horses stay sound into the last half of their first decade while TB's break down at age three or four? And what about the quarter-horses that fill canada's slaughtermills? I would like to have an obituary column where all horse deaths could be reported and respectfully commemorated. I'm not saying our sport is any worse than high school football...lots of kids die...lets figure out why and go from there. Currently, I have two 2 /y/o's and NO one but me will ever touch them, and no one but me will ever make the decisions regarding them...I don't want them breaking down, endangering their lives or the life of some jock. Feedback please, via e-mail Morgana
