Hi, I have tried Mandrake 7.1 until now and I would like to switch to Redhat 6.2. Mandrake can be installed wherever we want because there is no more "1024 cylinder" limitation... but what about Redhat 6.2??! Thanks for any information! ced

I would suppose that you could install GRUB and get similar results in Redhat 6.2. >

Doesn't matter whether you use GRUB or LILO on Mandrake 7.1 - the LILO version is recent enough to have the extensions to access beyond the 1024th cylinder. To use Redhat 6.2 and a boot partition beyond the 1024 cylinder, first build a lilo.conf that writes to /dev/fda (i.e. to floppy!) and use that to get started. Then get the latest LILO rpm from rawhide (it must be at least version 21.3) and install that. Switch the lilo.conf to use /dev/hda (or whatever harddrive you wish to boot from) and away you go. From the lilo stuff on Freshmeat: "Lilo is capable of booting beyond cylinder 1024 of a hard disk if the BIOS supports EDD packet call extensions to the int 0x13 interface." -- Toby Haynes The views and opinions expressed in this message are my own, and do not necessarily reflect those of IBM Canada.

Hi, No, Redhat has the 1024 cyclinder limit so you'll need a boot partition. If you need more help sign up to www.linuxfreesupport.com Steve "ced" <ced@mail.com> wrote in message news:399a9651$0$12145@bru5-newsr2.be.uu.net... > Hi, > > I have tried Mandrake 7.1 until now and I would like to switch to Redhat > 6.2. > Mandrake can be installed wherever we want because there is no more "1024 > cylinder" limitation... but what about Redhat 6.2??! > > Thanks for any information! > > ced > >

RH 6.2 used the older Lilo, the one that requires a / partition below 1023. Are you sure about that? I seem to recall it requires /boot there but / can be anywhere.
