I'm looking for a free dial-up in the USA that will work with linux, I.E.
doesn't have the banners. Anyone able to reccomend a good service, or even
one that charges like $5/month for dial-up only?

Rob

The ticket is to get a bogus account set up under Win98, then run
RASSpy or a logging program to get the user/password strings (which
are usually encrypted or modified by their software) required for a
straight logon, then just configure a standard call-up profile with
this info in whatever program you're using, then throw away all the
FISP's software. Works for any platform or O/S.

Instant raw ISP!

Naturally, you get rid of all their ads, timeouts, spyware and other
crap in the bargain.

Some FISPs have gotten wise to this hack and have blocked logging in
their DUN profiles or made it impossible to run RASSpy, but at least
2/3 are still hackable using this workaround.

NetZero, which is otherwise pretty high-quality access, has made this
impossible in v.3, but if you can get an earlier version of the
software you can run the hack and use the info for a clean login.

Juno, Freei, Bluelight and a whole bunch more are currently easy to
do this with. I get faster connects with NetZero and NZ is less
congested than the other FISPs I've tried, but this may vary from
user to user.

Good luck!

I signed up for freewwweb.com in windows using netscape. Then I just
wrote down the login stuff and used it in kppp (Caldera Openlinux 2.3
and 2.4). Works, but sometimes I can't get the server.

I signed up for freewwweb in Linux (RH 6.2) using the choice for those
that have a browser. Works just fine.

You might want to stop by http://www.teledyn.com/products/FreeWWW/
before
going to freewwweb.

Re freewwweb.com: if your local connect goes through an NT
server, it may use MS-CHAP authentication, which pppd may not be
ready to handle. Under this scheme, the ISP sends a string
(different each logon) which, under Windows DUN, is encrypted
using the password as a key. The ISP receives this, decodes it
with the correct password, and verifies that the result matches
the string it sent out. This is done to avoid sending passwords
in the clear. It may require installing the DES library and
recompiling pppd.....I am in process of doing that now--- and
figuring out what config-file changes will be needed...As it is,
I connect just fine, but am shortly disconnected, as ppd tries to
use an unencrypted p'word.....

I looked for the RASSPY software but all my searches came up w/ 0
results. I checked the hack search sites, too. Can anyone help me out w/
more specific directions?

WOW - they are so gone! They have been absorbed by www.juno.com - jyst check
out the old websites and see what happens "http://www.freewwweb.com".

Am now subjected to a huge permanent UGLY banner on the window.

Guess they haven't gotten around to you yet.

Best regards,

Brian

I do start Netscape on a blank page -- never see the garbage unless I
switch to their website. No intrusion on other sites.
