I use suse 8.2
My isp suggests me a sagem fast 8000 USB but it seems there are problems
under linux.
I look for a modem that will be accepted right away by linux (or a sure
solution for sagem)

Any tips ?

Thank you

The Alcatel USB 330 Speedtouch modem will work with SuSe but you have to
download a separate microcode first. You may want to consider a combined
router/adsl modem. Although these are more expensive, they are much easier
to setup and have the added advantage that you can plugin a second
computer, labtop etc.

a efficient networs speedtream 3650 works out of the box.
so does an alcatel speedtouch home.
the key is to get a modem that connects via a network card, and not usb.
then you don't need drivers.

Use anything stand-alone that would plug into a standard network
interface, as opposed to something requiring device-specific drivers.

If your network devices are ethernet-based then you'll only need to throw
packets at them, irrespective of the OS in use/driver availability/ease
of driver installation.
I use a ZyXEL Prestige 643 box; there are certainly cheaper ones around.

An ADSL modem with a built-in router makes adding other PCs to your LAN
easier too.

I have been using a Fritz Card DSL - a PCI card - for almost 2 years.
Only had some minor probs when changing network setting under WinME ...
but who cares? Linux has always been fine ;-)

An external router/switch wit an integrated DSL modem would also be nice
to connect several PCs. There's also some WLAN products out there.

Have a nice day,
Berny
