fortune printing long fortunes when using '-s' (& vice versa)

Hi, I've just fixed what I think is a bug in the fortune program, which causes it to not compute the length of the fortune correctly if the corresponding .dat file doesn't have the STR_RANDOM or STR_ORDERED flags set (using 'strfile -r' or 'strfile -o'). This would cause some long fortunes to be displayed when using '-s' and some short fortunes to be displayed when using '-l'. A patch is available from: <http://www.no-dns-yet.org.uk/slackware/bsd-games/bsd-games.fortune.len.gz> I'm just about to send this to Pat & find the maintainer for the bsd-games package, but the patch is there if anyone wants it. -- Simon <si...@no-dns-yet.org.uk> **** GPG: F4A23C69 "We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty." - Douglas Adams

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Simon tempted the fates in alt.os.linux.slackware by proclaiming the following to be true: > Hi, > > I've just fixed what I think is a bug in the fortune program, Cool. You're just a patching freak this week, ain't ya? The above reason is exactly why I stopped using the 'default' fortune, and switched to the 'enhanced' gfortune proggy. gfortune http://www.anarres.org/projects/gfortune/ Which, it should be noted, is not the same thing as this: gfortune - An X interface to fortune http://home.earthlink.net/~timhowe/linux/programs/gfortune.html (May the Gods damn ALL gnome/kde developers for naming EVERYTHING with a 'k' or a 'g' as the first letter of their project names. Bastards.) I was having the same issue until I re-read the manpage and re-discovered the -S switch. (see below) Using gfortune I can use: - -a Choose from all lists of maxims, both offensive and non. - -i Ignore case when matching regular expressions. - -L Set the minimum length (in characters) to num for a 'long' fortune. (Assumes -l.) - -N Set the maximum length (in lines) to num for a fortune (normally 999). - -S Set the maximum length (in characters) to num for a 'short' fortune. (Assumes -s). So, once I started using -S signature -p 'gfortune -o -S 184 -N 4' -t ~chiron/.template -r I've never had an issue since. =) Thanks for patching the Slack package tho- You rock. =) - -- +Chiron+ ( Cthulhu for President! You're just a patching freak this week, ain't ya? Yep. :) I've hardly taken any days off this year, so I had loads of holiday left. The end result being that I'm taking most of December off to go away with some friends & learn more C by fixing some of the easier bugs & working my way up. :) > The above reason is exactly why I stopped using the 'default' fortune, and > switched to the 'enhanced' gfortune proggy. Apart from that, I didn't have any problems with the original. Thanks for pointing it out though; I may switch to that one if I need any more features. > (May the Gods damn ALL gnome/kde developers for naming EVERYTHING with > a 'k' or a 'g' as the first letter of their project names. I have posted both the text and binariy AOLS mod quotes to alt.binaries.misc becaue of problems with asciipr0n right now. Look for the ones with "AOLS" in the subject. Vol II has 34 quotes in it right now so it will probably be another few weeks till it gets upto a good number like Vol I which had 137 quotes.
