Sorry. Just an other suggestion: "Welcome, dear reader (lurker) and/or contributor to alt.comp.freeware. In this Usenet-group we discuss *freeware*. A definition of *freeware* can be found at the Ware Glossary at http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/WareGlossary.php, and the FAQ of this group at http://clients.net2000.com.au/~johnf/faq.html. We all highly appreciate when everybody discuss *freeware* only. When you like to contribute to this group, we recommend that you read the 'acf Posting Tips' first. Those tips can be found at http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/Posting.php. Once a year all members of this group (contributors and 'lurkers') choose the best freeware programs available on the net. These elections are held in the last quarter of each year. The results of last year's vote can be found at the Pricelessware sites: http://www.pricelessware.org and http://www.pricelesswarehome.org. This Usenet-group is an unmoderated group. This means that there is no 'boss' around here. But it also means that everybody is entitled to send an abuse to the ISP of a poster when he/she 'trolls' or 'spams' this group. This group is one of the three groups dedicated to *freeware*. The other groups are alt.comp.freeware.discussion (for general discussions about freeware) and alt.comp.freeware.games (for the discussion of freeware games). A lot of the links to freeware programs mentioned in this group are collected and published on the 'Links to Freeware'-page at http://www.linkstofreeware.nl/. This message is posted on a weekly basis and is intented to be at the service of new visitors to this group." Something like this? That post is just a temporary continuation of the the links posts I've been making - until we get the language of the welcome message worked out. Your draft looks like a good start to me. Thanks Henk. I suggest we name the message "Welcome to alt.comp.freeware". Comments and suggestions from the group please. FYI - the message will be posted once a week for the benefit of newcomers to the ACF newsgroup. Please note that I am now back at work, so further discussions on this matter might well be missed by me. I'm not sure how we're all going to sort out what the text should be. My instincts are to stand back from the argument, let everyone else discuss it between themselves, and then post whatever text the group finally agree upon.

The weekly message could link to that instead.

I suggest that the message be prefixed so that it appears at the head of the list alphabetically, and also to give regulars something specific if they want to filter out the message. Something like: ***Welcome to alt.comp.freeware === Frank Bohan ΒΆ When I die, I'm leaving my body to science fiction.

All adjustments made as requested; and will be effective from the next post. Not sure what the procedure should be regarding future revisions. One way of reaching consensus about revisions in future I thought might work is for people to declare their interest in performing revisions, and then keep passing round successive drafts in a continuous circle until no more revisions are made. Whatever version remains after the rounds are made is the one that makes it to the release. The potential problem I see with this system is that when a stalemate is reached between 2 entrenched positions.

Discussion to follow as needed. Fair enough. A simple majority vote to supercede the previous standard posting would, I hope, be regarded as fair and acceptable. I trust that is agreeable to all; or at least the majority. It would be nice so that the post wasn't considered set in stone; but without changing it willy-nilly.
