This are the Categories and Subcategories I propose to use for PL2004
apps that are selected for PL2005. Other subcategories will be added as
needed.

Down2Home is a Bandwidth Monitor:

http://jitserv.coolfreepage.com/index2.htm

Down2Home

Down2Home 1.3 is a program that monitors your ADSL/Cablemodem/Dialup
traffic and provides you with usefull statistics about the amount of
data your PC has transferred.

Use it to see what's happening on your Dial-up/DSL or Cable connected on
your PC. Check if there is data transferred when you don't want
it.(Spyware, backdoors, whatever) Or use it to keep control over your
transfer volume...

A DUN manager is different. The INTERNET DUN Manager on PL2004 is NetLaunch:

NetLaunch
(Freeware)
Windows OS: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
Languages: English, many other languages (v 3.14E)
Description: NetLaunch allows you to start and shutdown applications
whenever you connect and disconnect from the internet via Dial-Up
Networking. It allows you to schedule connections and disconnections,
and can automatically fill-in your password and press the Connect button
for you. It also gives you a handy place to keep all your popular
Internet applications.

If you're wondering about a category for a *specific* freeware app see
if it's on this list (click the app's link to get to its
Category/Subcategory page).

Every one I could think of was there, just would the DUN manager be
classed as a down/up load amount tool like DU meter (Not free) or down 2
home ?

It was just that I could not where that sort of thing would go in your
list.

I want to go as free and open as I can but DUmeter is good... I just dont
want it on the new box and down 2 home was the only other I had found so
far, I do admit that I have not looked 'that' hard as yet :)

Ok, you are asking for comments, right? I mean, if I come back with
some comment, suggestions, are you going to treat me like in the other
thread where you asked for comments to your suggestions, I did, and
then you got snippy with me. Don't ask for comments if you're not
going to read them and use them.

Otherwise, I'm going over the list and will have some
comments/suggestions wihtin a day or so. Unless there's a cutoff on
when you will stop taking comments?

I'm not looking for a fight either. But when I disagreed with you in
the other thread, you got a bit snippy with me about it. I only wanted
to leave my comment in with the others, that was all.

Thank you... I will definitely have this in before then. I'd rather
try to get all the small things out of the way before you get busy with
the noms and votes. :-)

And please, when I do post back on this, please don't get upset by it.
I'm sure that you'll disagree with some of it, but it's only
suggestions and not a demand or an insult or such. All I ask is that
my suggestions or comments are treated as fairly as everyone else's
here. Nobody should get jumped or treated unjustly when they are
merely responding in proper.

I'll read and discuss comments from you and others. The goal is to reach
agreement. I'm looking for a group consensus - not a fight.

It would be *nice* to have subcategories resolved prior to the start of
nominations and discussion (Oct.1) - so that the apps can be discussed
in the proper threads. Probably won't happen though. . . :)

Comment. I think Business-Home are two seperate categories.
Suggestion. Home broken into Hobbies & Home:
(Yes, I said this last year.)

Home: e-Sword
There's always someone asking for a cross-stitch program. If someone brings
up a nomination for such there would be a (sub)category for it.

Astronomy: Cartes du Ciel (Sky Charts) and others that people mention
frequently. Cellestia, Stellarium. The last two also availble in other OS

Musician's Tools: AP Guitar tuner, K3Guitune. Guitar Effects - Stompbox,
GNuitar, etc
We get a lot of requests for a synthesizer(always that same guy), sheet
music forms and guitar tab writing software.

VanBasco's Karaoke Player (OMG)

B*by*w*re - Uhhh. never mind that one.

It would a surprise or very hard for the people that the list is intended
for to find such programs.

I only bring this up for clarities sake.
I realize that the list can't be an all-encompassing entity for there may
not be enough votes or interests in these catagories.

If I'm OT on this thread just tell me and crawl back into the hole where I
came from. :)

I agree with you on this one. I was going to suggest MISCELLANEOUS
though since there really wan't a whole lot for HOME specifically. But
HOME-HOBBY on the the other hand allows for some other programs fit in
there much better... Good choice Dszady!

Question: How about a catagory for " Health- Fittness - Medical " programs?
Possibly as a
sub catagory to "Home"? I don't think of this as a "hobby" though.

I'd second that one too! Already have a good candidate in mind, which
was mentioned here quite some times.

IMO we should add subcategories to the Nominations list when program
descriptions are submitted rather than try to anticipate all possible
nominations now. IIRC I have 900+ subcategories on the acf Program Info
pages - I think most programs that will be nominated already are in a
subcategory on those pages. That should be a good starting point - and
it should make category placement easier than it was last year.

These were "orphans". They used to be in DESKTOP. . .

Those are Multi-Media apps.

The hardest program to find seems to be the OCR app. . .

I don't know any *good* place for it - but trust the search boxes will
help. . .

> I only bring this up for clarities sake.

Dead on target for this thread. :)

This is the PL2004 distribution of programs.

14 BUSINESS-HOME
12 DESKTOP
32 FILE UTILITIES
17 GRAPHICS
57 INTERNET
15 MULTIMEDIA
23 ORGANIZERS
13 PROGRAMMING
19 SECURITY
36 SYSTEM UTILITIES
13 TEXT
10 WEB DESIGN

These are the PL2004 BUSINESS-HOME apps:

1	ESBCalc
2	Convert
3	Sphygmic Spreadsheet
4	OpenOffice.org
5	WordWeb
6	All-Purpose Spell Checker (APSC)
7	Ragtime Solo
8	Extended Character Map
9	AllChars
10	The Font Thing
11	X-Fonter
12	Graph Paper Printer
13	Cartes du Ciel (Sky Charts)
14	e-Sword

BUSINESS-HOME is one of the smaller pages. We only have two *strictly*
"hobby" apps on that page. The other "hobby" apps are in GRAPHICS (17)
AND MULTI-MEDIA (15).

IMO we need to consider the apps that ACF *actually* does select as
Pricelessware when we talk about Category pages - rather than programs
we *could* select.

PL2005 probably won't be a whole lot different from PL2004. Could you
tell us which PL2004 apps you would move? (The Program Index page can be
sorted on the Category-Subcategory columnn.) What would be where? How
many apps would be on the different pages?

IMO the present Categories are reasonably satisfactory - before we make
a change I'd like to be sure it will be an improvement.

"Other subcategories will be added as needed." IOW when you post the
program description we can discuss the subcategory. For suggested
subcategories see:

Your app might even be listed. . . ;)

How about a section on PDAs. I'd like to see one detailing all the
different PDA OSes and free software fo those.

I meant to respond to that. sorry. . .

Cross-referencing always *sounds* like a good idea. . .

but. . .

There *is* a cross-reference *column* on the Program Index page:

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2004/PL2004ProgramIndex.php

The few entries there are ones I added. No one has offered additional
suggestions. . .

PL2003 had some cross-references on the category pages - adding those
required a fair amount of additional work. Again, to the best of my
recollection - no *additional* cross-references were suggested by the
group.

ISTM that enthusiasm for the *idea* is high - willingness to help
*implement* the idea is low. . .

IMO that's because there isn't a real *need*. . .

IMO acf regulars *are* finding apps without much difficulty - and when
they can't it's usually because they don't know the name of the type of
app they're looking for. IOW - additional subcategory references
wouldn't necessarily help. IMO the Google search boxes that were
recently added to the PLH site web pages will be more help for that kind
of problem than subcategory cross-referencing.

My take on cross-referencing -> it's not worth the effort.

Is the suggestion, in some other thread, that subcategories not be tied
to single categories, undesirable or unworkable? There weren't many
responses to it, but the were supportive of the idea.

Those are not goals of the Pricelessware List.

This is the way it works: you nominate an app - it is added to the
Pricelessware Nominations List in an *existing* Category (the
subcategory may be new). New sections/ pages/ categories are created
*after* there is a demonstrated need - not before.

So, I think what you are saying is that if someone nominates some PDA
apps, and if the group votes to include them, then group will just have
to figure out where to put them. Not that PDA stuff can't be included,
just needs to be brought up by someone during the vote. Right?

Yup. :)

IMO the suggestion to create a PDA section now implies a change in the
PL goals as stated in the proposed Pricelessware Selection Procedures.
The goal is to nominate the best *programs*. Filling categories is *not*
a goal.

I probably should have quoted this in my reply:

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/PL-Procedures.htm

<q>
Criteria for Selection

The program should be one of the best Freeware programs available. The
Pricelessware List is a compilation of the favorite Freeware programs of
the readers of alt.comp.freeware. The goals of the Pricelessware List do
NOT include selecting programs to fit every subcategory. The programs
picked are not meant to be an exhaustive list of the best available
Freeware, but rather an answer to the often asked "which _____ is best?"
</q>

And where in that text does it limit the computer type. Just as you want
to add freeware from other OS's does not PDA's full in the above
criteria?

Hi Stan,

It doesn't and I didn't say there was a such a limit.

The suggestion was "How about a section on PDAs. I'd like to see one
detailing all the different PDA OSes and free software fo those."

The goal is to nominate the best *programs* we can think of. You may
nominate as many programs for PDAs as you like.

but. . . under the present procedures

We *don't* add a "section on PDAs" and then try to find programs to fill
it.

We nominate *programs* and add new categories for them if necessary.

If we want to select the Pricelessware List *primarily* by category we
have to change the Pricelessware *goals*.

I was not looking for a PDA section only if there were programs for the
PDA in some of the present categories could they be listed. From your
reply I believe the answer is yes.

The answer *is* yes. They don't have to be in a *present* category. It's
the *program* that gets nominated.

Note: There is one prohibited category. Games have not been considered
eligible because they are discussed in alt.comp.freeware.games - I think
I forgot to include that in the proposed PL procedures - will revise the
procedures if necessary to include that bit of info.

It doesn't. It is my understanding that PDA freeware could indeed be
nominated. If it gets seconded and people vote that it should be
included, then it would be. At least that's how I understand the current
procedure.

I made a misstatement above. I don't think games have ever been allowed
on the PL. . .

ACF.games was created by ACF participants. *When* it was created there
was a consensus in ACF that games should no longer be discussed in this
group - that was some years back.

ACF.games participants have created one list of best games. They may be
interested in creating another - perhaps as a joint project with ACF.

IMO we should explore other possibilities in a joint discussion with
ACF.games participants *before* discussing the addition of games to the
Pricelessware List.

Shouldn't we think again about it?
The Criteria for Selection are:

"The program should be one of the best Freeware programs available. The
Pricelessware List is a compilation of the favorite Freeware programs of
the readers of alt.comp.freeware."

and often here we talk and suggest also games, and these games are freeware
programs.
If existed alt.comp.freeware.browsers, couldn't we consider browsers
eligible?

I'd like to have also games in the Pricelessware List.

I read it (don't remember if I've ever posted). I'll watch for your post.

FWIW - quite a few ACF participants post in ACF.games too.

Hi Garrett,

I'm not in favor of adding a 13th Category page called MISCELLANEOUS. I
think your proposed revisions will get more response from the group if
you show the *changes*. IOW if you include the PL2004 Categories after
your proposed categories.

Humble apologies. What *was* I thinking? :(

Taking my own advice I've uploaded a page that shows *which* PL2004
subcategories/ programs are moving. See:

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2005/PL2005ProgramIndex.php

If you want to see where the apps were before compare that page and the
PL2004 page:

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2004/PL2004ProgramIndex.php

Most of the PL2005 links work - ATM PL2005 pages show PL2004 programs. . .

[about 200 list quoting lines snipped}

Hi Susan,

with respect, is it really necessary fully quoting Garrets long list
again? Perhaps others quotes the whole list in an answer to your posting
again and again and so on.
If someone needs/wants to see this list, one can/should read it back in
the thread, imo.

Nice weekend!
