Great choice, George, makes me think of a local girl who made good, Carson McCullers.

"The Heart is a Lonely Hunter"

"The Lonely Hunter," by William Sharp (aka and written as "Fiona MacLeod") is a wonderful poem. Mr. Sharp closely guarded Fiona's identity. Project Gutenberg has published the memoir on Mr. Sharp, written by his wife, in which the dual identities are (partially) explained.

Carson McCullers, of course, took the title of her book from Mr. Sharp's poem.

Did you suspect it soon after we wrote the above?

I posted about it before you, see my first post on this thread.

And what did I win for correctly naming Edgar Allan Poe in one of your "Jeopardy" threads?

🙂

And you said that it "makes you think" of Carson McCullers, but you did not state that Ms. McCullers got the line from the poem. "Words matter." You also "suspected that she had" after we wrote our post. Therefore, you only thought of McCullers but did not make any connections, and after we made the connection, you stated that you "suspected that she had." Not sure, though?

Did you know that Fiona MacLeod was a man? Does that make you read the poem (if you read the poem) differently?

No, I haven't read the bio for the poet yet.

Look, fat man, I've posted some photos for you to look at and dream about.

I can't help it if your fat and ugly. Live with it, Zu Bolton must have taught you something in your years of friendship.

I think you're a faggot, not in a sexual way, just a faggot, alone and remembering the acid and good old days.

I must run but will return to see how far you've progressed from the shed.

Senetto, I've seen enough of your photos, you're just a Woody Harelson look alike, and if I want to see him, I'll watch Zombieland again.

Now practice using the apostrophe, if you can comprehend how.

HTH and HAND.

Yes, indeed:

http://www.thisdayinquotes.com/2011/06/my-heart-is-lonely-hunter-by-fiona.html

*****

McCullers took the title of her first novel from an old poem by the Scottish poet Fiona Macleod.

This sad, dreamy poem, called “The Lonely Hunter,” is about a girl who mourns her dead lover and thinks about joining him.

It was published in 1896 in the book From the Hills of Dream, a collection of Macleod’s Celtic-flavored poetry.

The line in the poem that inspired McCullers’ book title is the last line in the third verse:

“Green wind from the green-gold branches, what is the song you bring?
What are all songs for me, now, who no more care to sing?
Deep in the heart of Summer, sweet is life to me still,
But my heart is a lonely hunter that hunts on a lonely hill.”

You learned all that from the five lines that George Dance wrote? How exactly did you divine those facts? From the word "sweet?" Or, maybe from "heart is a lonely hunter?"

BTW, you have never read "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter," have you?

However, that's not what you wrote. You said "from your post, George Dance." George Dance posted exactly once in this thread. The information that you learned came from us. "As usual."

You have never read "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter," have you? We didn't think so.

As usual, I learned a lot from your post, George Dance.

For example, that Carson McCullers was directly inspired by the poem, and that Fiona "Was a man, baby!"

And so it goes.

Please give us a review of the book "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter," since you have read it and you are a fan. How did she use language? What were the plot devices? Was there a satisfactory conclusion?

I remember that one, and Marlon Brando starred with Elizabeth Taylor in the adaptation of "Reflections in a Golden Eye":

Both Donkey and his river friend like to drop author names but have never read any of their books. The movie sounds like a laugh-a-minute: (from Rotten Tomatoes) "In this adaptation of the Carson McCullers novel, John Singer (Alan Arkin), who is deaf and mute, tries to help the people around him. He rents a bedroom in a small Southern town to be closer to his friend, Spiros (Chuck McCann), who is also deaf. John attempts to strike up a friendship with Mick (Sondra Locke), the teenage daughter of his disabled landlord (Biff McGuire), and meets the town drunk (Stacy Keach Jr.). Later, he helps Dr. Copeland confront his failing health."

"Reflections in a Golden Eye" didn't get good reviews. We laughed at the description (again from Rotten Tomatoes): "An Army major (Marlon Brando) with a lusty wife (Elizabeth Taylor) feels homosexual in the 1940s South."

More of your bullshit, Nancy Gene. I read most of the writing of Carson McCullers when I was a teenager, almost fifty years ago.

Give us a review, then, of the book (not the movie). FWIW, we don't believe that you read anything but comic books as a teenager. You were not exactly an English language prodigy, and the subject matter of Carson McCullers' books doesn't sound like anything you would ever read.

It doesn't matter to me what you believe, Nancy Gene.

From the day you stalked Stephan Pickering to this newsgroup you've been nothing much more than a troll, a cyberbully and wannabe thug.

And so it goes.

When will you learn, that will never, ever, ever happen?

Posted in its entirety for convenience:

The Lonely Hunter
Green branches, green branches, I see you
        beckon; I follow!
Sweet is the place you guard, there in the
        rowan-tree hollow.
There he lies in the darkness, under the frail
        white flowers,
Heedless at last, in the silence, of these sweet
        midsummer hours.

But sweeter, it may be, the moss whereon he
        is sleeping now,
And sweeter the fragrant flowers that may
        crown his moon-white brow:
And sweeter the shady place deep in an Eden
        hollow
Wherein he dreams I am with him---and,
        dreaming, whispers, "Follow!"

Green wind from the green-gold branches,
what is the song you bring?
What are all songs for me, now, who no more
        care to sing?
Deep in the heart of Summer, sweet is life to
        me still,
But my heart is a lonely hunter that hunts on
        a lonely hill.

Green is that hill and lonely, set far in a
        shadowy place;
White is the hunter's quarry, a lost-loved hu-
        man face:
O hunting heart, shall you find it, with arrow
        of failing breath,
Led o'er a green hill lonely by the shadowy
        hound of Death?

Green branches, green branches, you sing of
        a sorrow olden,
But now it is midsummer weather, earth-
        young, sunripe, golden:
Here I stand and I wait, here in the rowan-
        tree hollow,
But never a green leaf whispers, "Follow, oh,
        Follow, Follow!"

O never a green leaf whispers, where the
        green-gold branches swing:
O never a song I hear now, where one was
        wont to sing
Here in the heart of Summer, sweet is life to
        me still,
But my heart is a lonely hunter that hunts on
        a lonely hill.
