What Remains

I pass into our room and think you will appear around the corner
to resume our day, but that’s impossible; I saw the mourners
sending the departed to another life or death or in-between,
leaving an unbelieving, grieving spouse to cope alone or careen

between living with memories and joining a dear one 
much sooner than planned because all of the fun
had flown from the days, and the nights were
without sleep from the dark to light whispers.  

I suppose I must wait to see what follows now
since I seem to be here but not with you.  How
is it possible for me to have died and you are there,
alive and breathing and laughing, and that’s not fair.
