Good choice, I was just thinking about Robert W. Service in comparison with Rudyard Kipling. As I wrote earlier:

Interesting, I just came across an old copy of "Barrack-Room Ballads", sort of Robert W. Service type poems, written by Kipling.

The characters have that feel, "Danny Deever", "Mandalay" and the classic "Gunga Din"...
